Introduction to Slovenia and it's Language
Today we aren’t going to start learning the language par se, but here is an important introduction with an assignment at the end.
For all of you who signed up I expect full participation, I think you will enjoy this and you will have a good understanding of SLovene by the end of this.
Introduction to Slovenia and its Language
"Slovenija moja lepote Dezela" -Slovenia my beautiful country (Accents not included to lazy lol)
Slovenia is a Slavic/Germanic country located in the heart of Europe to the east of Italy and to the south of Austria. Throughout Slovenia’s diverse history which dates back to before 406 (The Rise of teh Germanic Tribes and the Slavic migration) Slovenes never really aspired to be a state. Before the first world war it was apart of the Austro-Hungarian empire and after it was apart of Yugoslavia and led by Marshal Tito who was himself half Slovene.
Slovenia is unspoiled and not many people have heard of it, we are commonly mixed up with SLovakia (a nation of no relation) and this really pisses Slovenes off. Slovenia is probably one of the most beautiful countries in the world but it’s untouched by tourists. Slovenia is not some poor eastern European state as some would suspect- The GDP per capa of Slovenia is above the EU standard, and it is the highest out of all Balkan states. Its projected that by 2020 Slovenia's GDP Per capa will either meat or exceed Switzerland’s GDP per capa.
Slovenia's Current President is Danilo Turk who won the Presidential elections, and succeded Janez Drnovsek (who died shortly after leaving office), Slovenia's Prime Minister is a Social Democrat- his name is Borut Pahor. SLovenia is recognzied as a fully democratic western nation, and both our health care and life expectency are rated higher (WHO estimate, 2008) than the United States.
As Slovenia develops, its population (like in most western states) decreases. As of now Slovenia's population is just above 2 million (About the size of Toronto in population) however, in a few decades it is expected to level off at 1.7 million.
Slovenian Food is similar to that of its neighboring states, namely Italy and Yugoslavian states but there are a few dishes unique only to slovenija.
Slovenia's climate is awesome. In the South of the country, we touch the Adriatic sea. But in the north the alps run through the country. In the North East expansive vineyards dot the rolling hills near Austria.
Mount triglav, Slovenija's highest and most well known mountain. It is depicted symbolically on the Slovenian coat of arms.
Slovenia touching the adriatic sea
Slovenija's capital- Ljubljana, a city of over 200 000 people.
Maribor- Our second largest city
Slovenian army, considered one of the best trained armies in Europe.
